DOSHA TYPES AND FOOD
In Sanskrit, ayur symbolizes life and veda emblematizes knowledge. The system of teachings is more than 5000 years old and covers extensively broad area of knowledge about human life. Ayurveda teaches us how to live and get closer to the cosmic energy. It has to be highlighted that Ayurveda is not a religion. It is a prescribed path to the attainment of personal happiness. In practice, the teaching has numerous applications to becoming perfectly fit.
A key element of the Ayurvedic practice is the daily food. It is believed that the food is highly powerful medicine because we consume it every single day. When we eat healthily, we are full of energy. The improper eating habits are, therefore, the source of malaise. And here comes the big surprise: there is no improper eating according to Ayurveda. The body energy or the ‘dosha’ determines the most appropriate diet for each person. Our doshas define the habits, reactions, and emotions that we manifest. If this sounds somehow abstract, find your dosha according to several characteristics (see the explanation below). If what you just wrote sounds objective, the surprise is complete – everything looks quite logical and real.
The universe is a reflection of the five main energies: space, air, fire, earth, and water. Upon birth, we receive these energies in certain proportions, so there is some predetermined certainty to your life path.
When the space and the air unite, we get the ‘vata’ or the air dosha. The combination of air and water gives the ‘pita’ or the fire dosha. Water and earth, on the other hand, form the ‘kafa’ or the earth dosha. Of course, most people posses a combination of the three doshas, but one usually dominates. The big trick here is to determine your primary dosha. That is why, the Ayurveda experts advise that someone gives us a hand when we answer questions about ourselves. We think that we know ourselves but this is so far from the truth!
So, what if we look for practices that complement weight treatment? The leading principle of Ayurveda is to heal disbalances in the energy constitution. Simply put, if you have a fire dosha, and your life adds more fire up, you are more likely to get out of control. So, do not top fire with more fire, wet with more wet, and so on. The best weight for each dosha differs. Each dosha determines requires different foods, habits, emotional disposition, herbs, and even jewels. If we fail to keep up with these principles, we risk changes in the energy levels. Such conditions provoke the development of diseases. Usually, we cure them by the means of modern medicine. However, we are only doing some surface repairs. Our lifestyle, habits, and diet are essential to stay perfectly fit in the long run. It is important to treat the reasons that lead to the disease conditions.
The main principles of Ayurveda teach that ‘we shall not eat unless we are hungry’, ‘we must not eat when we are gloomy’, or ‘we shall abstain from eating on the go’. In this way, we will increase our chances to attain our best weight.
Below are the main features of the three dosha types, complemented by recommendations for a balanced living.
Vata
People of this type just do not need to fight weight excess. They are naturally skinny. Moreover, they gain weight with difficulty and lose weight excess with ease. Vata people have problems with their body posture and back. They are either very tall or too short. Their fingers are long and exquisite. Vata people tend to be anxiety driven. They suffer from insomnia and worry excessively. At the same time, Vata are artists and novelty discoverers. To balance the vata, they need lots of rest, piece of mind, warmth, and massages with sesame oil. To attain their best weight, Vata people must avoid bitter and chilly foods. Sweat, salty, and sour foods are recommended. The dosha is light and dry. So, it is best to cook with plenty of oil and eat warm. Vata must not wear silver, especially during the winter season. The silver feels chilly on your skin. The same is true for pearls.
Pita
The Pita people have a well balanced constitution. Sometimes, they are blond and have freckles. They have fair skin. Pita often suffer from allergies and skin rushes. They are predisposed to ulcers and inflammatory processes. As for their typical traits, the pita people are famous for their sharp mind and creative energies. They are purposeful and often successful. Irritability is their major minus. Coldness in any form and kind is recommended for the pita dosha. To maintain their best weight, Pita should exert physical pressure and avoid stimulants or excessive amounts of alcohol. They also have to shun sour, salt, and chilly. The sweet and bitter foods are beneficial, if not too hot and cooked in moderate amount of oil. Avoid wearing gold and rubies. They transmit heat while you don’t need more.
Kafa
Kafa people have solid constitution. Naturally, they fight weight excess with most difficulty. Their neck is strong while their fingers-massive. They have quite some strength. The peaceful Kafa rarely get out of balance. They dislike changes. Family and home comfort is what they need. They love to cook. Given that losing weight excess is painful for Kafa, they have to make special efforts to stay perfectly fit.
To balance the kafa, look for diverse stimuli. Physical exercise is highly recommended. Avoid sweat, sour, and salty foods. Bitter and chilly foods should be preferred. Eat warm and use only tiny bits of oil. Keep warm, in general. It is best to wear copper, ruby, or gold ornaments.
