THE INNER CONFLICT AND ITS EXPRESSION

We all know that obesity might be the result of psychological discomfort. We need weight treatment and at the same time, we need to find the deeper reasons that trigger accumulating weight exess. After all, we aim to reach our best weight and a peace of mind! If we treat obesity as an outcome of psychological misbalance, then a difference exists between what we need and want and what we are capable and allowed to do. Psychosomatic conditions work in a similar fashion. Here, the psychological discomfort will find a physical expression in our weight excess. We would like to lift unwanted extra pounds and attain our best weight. We might also think of relieving our inner conflict.

All diseases come from our worries, only syphilis is caught in pleasure. Although we can argue about the second part, it is certain that many diseases: colitis, gastritis, hyper- and hypotension, anorexia, and others, have psychosomatic origins.

As stated, one of the main reasons for psychosomatic conditions is our inner conflict. If the conflict remains unresolved, it finds expression in physiological symptoms. Here we speak about the conflict between our wishes and the social prohibitions or taboos. For instance, sometimes we just want to grab our boss and ‘help’ him jump out of the window. Many times, the desired actions contrast with the established social order. Hence, they will remain hidden in the unconsciousness. So, we are unable to recognize what we really want. Yet, we feel constant emotional discomfort. This dilemma is resolved by transferring the discomfort from the psychological to the physical level.

When a psychosomatic disease appears, we feel relief. This happens because the inner conflict has disappeared. The theory of Frantz Alexander is similar. He believes in the principle: where it is thin, it breaks. So, people who are genetically predisposed to heart or liver diseases will have these organs hurt by psychosomatic conditions. However, Alexander considers that the physical symptoms cannot replace the inner conflict because they do not have emotional expression. The hypertension cannot reduce the hidden anger: it is the physical symptom of this anger. If we get angry often, we run the risk of developing a chronic hypertension.

In the context of the last example: what is unhealthy anger? Remember that it can turn into psychosomatic disease, too. Here are some expressions of the unhealthy anger: we maintain excessive requirements as to how other people should treat us; we demand that other people shall get out of our way when we try to achieve certain goals; we accept that people are always at fault. Where is the inner conflict in this situation? Well, we have higher demands than what we can actually get. For obvious reasons, we can`t control people. The solution is to accept that all people make mistakes. They might have done something stupid, but this does not qualify them as stupid in general.

When we feel emotional discomfort, we have to be alert for inner conflicts. Then, it is a good idea to look closely at our emotions and the situations that arouse them. Always aim at identifying the underlying reasons. It is recommended to put all emotions on a sheet of paper. Reread them after a certain period of time. See what repeats itself most. Ask the question ‘Will I find this behaviour agreeable if I watch myself on the outside?’ Follow the progress made.

Finally, remember that people can and do change! We deserve to reach good weight and remain perfectly fit!
